FASHION AS ART

FASHION AS ART I
(Minimum three months)

This course combines fashion design and construction with the various textile arts in a creative and personal expression. The projects are planned to explore several main areas of the textile arts and apply them to fashion and costume design in the realization and construction of several finished garments and fashion accessories. Techniques cover the necessary pattern drafting, sewing, and construction to realize the projects. The textile art media, employed to enrich and personalize fashion, costrume or accessory are selected according to the proposed design: Surface design techniques, fiber techniques, and needlework techniques.
Prerequisite: A basic sewing course or some sewing experience.
 

FASHION AS ART II
(Minimum three months)

A continuation of FAA I with further development of technical and designing skills. Encouragement to experimentation, increased creative development, sophistication of idea and excellence in craftsmanship. Specialization in specific area of interest. Prerequisite: Fashion As Art I or its equivalent. A basic sewing course or some sewing experience. If possible, a portfolio of past work.

 

SEWING AND TAILORING
 
SEWING Level I
(Minimum three months)
 
This introductory course is intended as a foundation in basic sewing techniques. The course covers numerous techniques from basic hand sewing, measuring, layout, cutting, basic sewing machine construction techniques, as well as the proper use of the carious sewing machines, home, industrial, and serger overlock machines. This course will enable the students of the Textile Design to take their finished textiles and realize articles of clothing, quitls, or sewn art objects of their own design, and for those in Fashion as Art to poperly sew their own collection.
 
SEWING Level II
(Minimum three months)
 
A continuation of the first semester in greater depth, studying more complex and difficult sewing techniques.
 

ADVANCED SEWING AND TAILORING
(Minimum three months)

Must be at an advanced sewing level. The course covers more technical methods, professional use of sewing machines and specific tailoring techniques.

 

PATTERN DESIGN
(Minimum three months)
 
Introdution to flat pattern methods. Available only if there are enough students for a three month course.
Prerequisite: basic sewing courses.
